Kindergarten is the right time to begin teaching students how to write a sentence. For some students, the prospect of writing out an entire sentence can be a daunting task. It is important to build up handwriting skills, small motor muscles, and fine motor control during the preschool years in anticipation of the writing expectations in kindergarten.
Most students will not be able to come up with their own sentences, so we teach kindergarten writing with a “guided” method. Students begin writing with fill-in-the blank type activities in which they copy a good majority of a pre-written sentence, then add their own details to make it their own. Not only will this provide early writers with a strong foundation, but it will also help build their confidence in their own ability as a writer.
